“Abortion is almost or completely forbidden for half of American women”, Nicole Bachchan, political scientist and historian, expert in the United States, explains Friday, June 24, at FranceInfo. The Supreme Court has granted freedom to 50 U.S. states to prohibit voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) by burying it in their soil. Row vs. Wade since 1973Until then the right to abortion was guaranteed.

franceinfo: How do you explain this “retreat”?
Nicole Bachchan: It is a radical conservative attack that has been developing for 50 years. Since abortion was legalized in the United States, churches and conservative groups have been working with you to find lawyers to advocate, and so on.
“But this change really happened when Donald Trump became president. His religious concerns are known to be self-serving or very superficial.”Nicole Bachchan, historian
But he had the opportunity to appoint three judges to the Supreme Court, three radically conservative judges who made a difference today. Donald Trump is fulfilling the agreement he made with his judges and his constituents today: banning abortion in the United States will happen in half of the U.S. states in the coming weeks.
What can Joe Biden do to change this decision? Is there a way to prevent this stop from being used?
Now, no, not really. The Supreme Court is the supreme law of the land. So the president said “what we can do is pass a federal law protecting the right to abortion passed in Congress in Washington”, so it’s a federal law that applies to all states. The Supreme Court, in its judgment today, in all hypocrisy, does not say, “We prohibit abortion” if you like my opinion, but says “we will no longer defend it”. So states must fulfill their will and vote for their legislation. Half of those 50 states will ban it. So, one can imagine that a federal law establishing the right of all American women to abortion would violate this Supreme Court ruling. But that would mean a very strong majority in Congress, especially in the Senate, with at least 60 senators. Not only does Joe Biden not have this majority today, he is unlikely to get it when the Assembly elections come again by November. The truth is, for half of American women, abortion is practically or completely prohibited, and women continue to have abortions in situations where they think they have no choice. It’s as old as world history and what’s going to happen is as old as the history of women.
What are these women going to do now if the state where they live prohibits abortion?
The super rich, those who can take vacations, those who have little cash, and those who are helpful with family will travel. They will travel thousands of miles to get an appointment at a clinic in the liberal state. In more liberal states, clinics are completely overburdened. Then the most humble women, who have already had many children and are unable to take a day off, will seek “methods” that endanger their lives and health. Some will give birth to unbearable children.
“In fact, it’s absolutely dramatic, because the legislator or the Supreme Court judge is imagining that abortion is going to be prevented, not, that abortion is going to be prevented in the right state of health.Nicole Bachchan, historian
In your opinion, does the American community approve of this decision handed down today by the Supreme Court?
No. Only 28% of Americans want us to overturn this famous Row versus Wade ruling defending the right to abortion. 28%, does not mean it should be banned. Which is not one. In fact evolution is an active part of evangelicals, radical conservative Catholics and a section of the Republican Party. Republican leaders such as Nixon, who was president when the abortion was legalized, Reagan, George W. Bush, Eisenhower, none of these radicals. This radicalization is very recent and inconsistent with the general evolution of society.
