After a year-long battle with lung cancer, Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist passed away Tuesday
Michael Nyqvist was recognized for his role as Mikael Blomkvist in “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” trilogy, based on the immensely popular books by Stieg Larsson.
Nyqvist’s family stated that his dedication and passion for acting and film was “felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him.”
His death was announced by a representative for his family, who added that “one of Sweden’s most respected and accomplished actors . . . passed away quietly surrounded by family.”
Nyqvist’s death at the age of 56 left his entire family bereft, as well as many fellow actors who had worked alongside him.
Nyqvist has appeared in a number of Hollywood blockbusters, including “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”, “Colonia”, and “John Wick”
Nyqvist’s memoir “Just After Dreaming”, published in 2010, is notably acclaimed and details his childhood memories and how he found his biological parents.
Emotional tributes from co-stars on social media
Scottish actor Gerard Butler, who starred alongside Nyqvist on soon-to-be-released thriller “Hunter Killer”, left a sincere tribute to his co-star on Instagram, stating: “It breaks my heart we’ll never get to sit together and watch this movie,” and remarking upon the deceased actor’s “incredible talent”, “child-like qualities”, and “humility and warmth”.
Dominic Monaghan, who worked with Nyqvist on the TV series “100 Code”, also paid tribute on Instagram. “He was a sweet man with an infectious smile, a great dad and a fine actor”.
In the US version of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, Nyqvist’s character Blomkvist was played by Bond actor Daniel Craig.
Nyqvist is survived by his two children Ellen and Arthur, and his wife Catharina Ehrnrooth.
“Michael’s joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him. His charm and charisma were undeniable,” another statement from his family read.
