Richard Hammond has been sent to a hospital on a plane after a terrible accident in a Swiss mountain race.

The Car burst into flames

He was purportedly driving his white Rimac Concept One electric sports car on a road closed for the Bergrennen Hemberg race.

According to local media, the race car came off the track after the car burst into flames.

Hammond was in Switzerland to shoot scenes for his the Amazon series, The Grand Tour on the Hemburg Hill Climb.

The statement the star’s producer has released says that the accident as “serious” but said Hammond “fortunately suffered no serious injury”.

It continued: “Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames.”

“He was flown by air ambulance to a hospital in St Gallen to be checked over revealing a fracture to his knee.”

“Nobody else was in the car involved in the accident, and we’d like to thank the paramedics on site.”

Conscious but very shaken

Till know the reasons behind the crash are not revealed; however, the investigations are being carried out, The Grand Tour said.

Jeremy Clarkson said Richard Hammond’s accident is one of the most terrifying things he had ever seen.

An insider, however, said Hammond was “conscious but very shaken”.

They told The Sun: “He is currently being treated in hospital and having the once over.”

“It’s quite incredible that he’s come away from this with nothing more serious quite frankly.”

“There was real concern for Richard but the emergency services were quickly on hand and he’s a very lucky boy.”

The insider recalled Richard Hammond’s 288mph crash a jet-powered car in 2006.

“The crash was really bad,” they said. “The car completely flipped and then burst into flames.”

James Hammond co-hosted Top Gear alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

However, he and May quit the show after Clarkson was charged with physically attacking a producer and dismissed.
