CNN has decided to cancel religion scholar Reza Aslan’s docu-series, Believer, after recently being confirmed for a second season. This is reportedly due to Reza Aslan calling President Trump “a piece of shit” on Twitter for his comments on the UK attacks.
CNN cancelled the religion docu-series produced and hosted by religion scholar, Reza Aslan, even though they were confirmed for a second season. This comes just after Reza Aslan responded to President Trump’s comments on the UK terror attacks, by calling him a “piece of shit” and “an embarrassment to human kind.”
Trump used the events that took place in London in order to promote his widely controversial travel ban against seven Muslim-majority countries. In response, Reza tweeted, saying: “This piece of shit is not just an embarrassment to America and a stain on the presidency. He’s an embarrassment to humankind.”
After he was met with huge criticism, Aslan deleted the tweet and apologized, saying: “I should not have used profanity to describe the President when responding to his shocking reaction to the #LondonAttacks.”
About a week later, CNN released a statement to announce his show’s cancellation, saying: “CNN has decided to not move forward with production on the acquired series ‘Believer’ with Reza Aslan. We wish Reza and his production team all the best.” This makes Aslan the second contractor to be dropped by the channel. About a week ago, Kathy Griffin was also dropped after she had released a highly controversial picture of herself holding a bloodied head of President Trump.
Reza’s Response To the Cancellation
Reza took to Twitter to publically respond to the decision: “Obviously I am very disappointed in this decision.”
“However, in these politically charged times, the tenor of our nation’s discourse has become complicated, and I recognize that CNN needs to protect its brand as an unbiased news outlet.”
“Similarly, I need to honor my voice,” he continued. “I am not a journalist. I am a social commentator and scholar. And so I agree with CNN that it is best that we part ways.”
