On Thursday, popular 1970s soul singer and father of Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr., Cuba Gooding Sr., passed away at the age of 72.

Circumstances of the death:

According to TMZ, he was found on the steering wheel of his silver Jaguar. The fire department arrived to the car which was parked on a street in Woodland Hills, they couldn’t resuscitate him despite attempting CPR.

There were many bottles of alcohol in the car as well as drug paraphernalia, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said.

Assistant chief of operations at the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, Ed Winter, gave an interview to the Los Angeles Daily News saying that Gooding Sr.’s car pulled up to the area on Thursday morning at around 3:30 a.m., which was shown in surveillance videos.

Gooding Sr. was a member of the band The Main Ingredient as their lead singer. The band was better known for the song “Everybody Plays the Fool” which was a hit.

Gooding Sr. and his wife Shirley Gooding were married twice. They divorced in 1974 and were remarried in 1995. They had four children together; Cuba and Omar, who are both actors, April, their daughter, and a musician son called Tommy.

Cuba Gooding Jr. memories of his father:

Cuba spoke about his father saying: “I remember, one of my earliest memories … he would perform at Disneyland, and after his performances, they would close it off to the general public and all the performers’ kids would go on the rides as many times as they’d want. He would pull me up on stage with him and make me finish the song because I’d seen him perform all the time. It was a lot of feeling like, ’I come from royalty.’”

Next week would’ve marked Gooding Sr. 73rd birthday.
