The underwear gets smaller, and the audiences larger, every year for the Victoria’s Secret fashion show, and 2016 is no different. The event, held in Paris this week, is scheduled to air next week in the U.S.
A couple of things that are special about this years’ show include the six themed segments, the lineup of celebrity models, and the musical talent which included superstar Lady Gaga. The $3 million dollar diamond and crystal bra was the true shining star of the show, and came with it’s own crew of security guards.
Kendall Jenner, and Bella and Gigi Hadid, were among the beauties strutting the legendary runway, that was staged in France for the first time. Show guests entered the Paris’ Grand Palais to the classic sound of a string orchestra playing softly surrounded by a huge Arc de Triomphe. However, the serenity lasted only a few seconds before the familiar neon lights signaled the start of the 40-minute spectacle. Although showing off their new wings, among other things, these first-timers performed like pros.
Veteran Swedish model Elsa Hosk pranced out in one of the most dramatic ensembles in the history of the show; a huge, three-dimensional red Chinese dragon. Not to be outdone, Kendall Jenner wore thigh-high boots, a long-line plunging bustiere, and suede angel wings. Finally, Gigi Hadid could have taken flight, sporting a hand-painted Aztec-patterned cape that floated wistfully behind her.
The show was divided into six themed segments that included Road Ahead, Mountain Romance, Pink Nation, Secret Angel, Dark Angel and Bright Night Angel. None of them disappointed as each was more dramatic than the last.
The Mountain Romance section opened with a backlit profile of Lady Gaga surrounded by smoke. The Million Reasons singer slowly worked her way up the runway in a long, black lace gown, with large red roses and matching lipstick, as models sauntered past her. Bruno Mars also performed his hit 24k Magic in a black tuxedo and fur coat, bringing the audience to their feet.
But it was The Weeknd that got the most applause of the night. The singer serenaded Bella Hadid, with his hit song ‘Starboy’, which brought the house down. He may have lingered a bit longer with lingerie-clad Hadid as they have been dating for quite a while.
