Shannen Doherty, who shot to fame in the 1990s as Brenda Walsh in the television series 90210, has revealed that her mother is giving her strength as she undergoes radiation treatment for breast and lymphatic cancer.
The brave actress, 45, told her social media followers that her mother went with her because although she felt so tired after treatment, she was going Christmas shopping to get her husband a present. Staying upbeat, she added: “I love the holidays!”
Ms Doherty, who also suffers from Crohn’s has undergone radiation, chemotherapy and a mastectomy in a bid to rid her body of cancer. She said that while radiation left her feeling grumpy and fatigued, she still took part in regular fitness sessions, which she found both physcially and mentally healing.
Happy to be alive
She added: “It’s so easy to get depressed in the battle against cancer but everyday I wake up and remind myself to be happy to be alive, relatively healthy and able to move. I’m so thankful for this life I have.”
Her husband Kurt Iswarienko, a photographer, whose latest shoot was with Passengers star Chris Pratt for the January cover of British GQ magazine, also provides unstinting support. Ms Doherty said that having cancer had changed her into somebody completely different. While she said she thought she was brave and gracious before, she was really just hiding.
Earlier this year, Ms Doherty revealed that her cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. She explained that she was undergoing a series of chemotherapy followed by radiation in a bid to shrink the tumours. Ms Doherty also said that she had undergone a single mastectomy in May but found that the unknown was the scariest part about cancer. While pain, or losing a breast, were manageable, she said, she worried about the future.
